On a cold and rainy day in Xinyu, the students started their service work early with an 8:00 lecture. They first attended a class with limited participation in the morning, and then listened to a lecture on the origin of Chinese characters. We then walked over to the Xinyu College cafeteria to have lunch with the students, and then returned back to the hotel for a break — but mostly to go through the luggage to find warm clothes! In the afternoon, the Davidson team started teaching on their own, dividing up classes into smaller groups for conversation. After an hour of teaching, they then attended a workshop on Chinese calligraphy; watching them, I found that they were totally engrossed in the calligraphy, and will be bringing home the fruits of their labors. Above is a picture of Libby Hubbard, concentrating hard on her brush strokes. We then went back to the student cafeteria for a hearty dinner. After dinner, we returned to the foreign language building to participate in English Corner — an opportunity for the Xinyu College students to practice their English by speaking one-on-one to the Davidson students. When we arrived at the foreign language building, the lobby was mobbed with Xinyu students who wanted to talk with our students — they felt like rock stars! In the picture, you can see Idris Evans surrounded by eager Xinyu students wanting to talk in English.
