Here we are at our first dinner out together, a hot pot place, northern food in a southern city. There’s a boiling soup in the middle of each table in which we threw various meats, many kinds of tofu, fungi, greens, etc., with dipping sauces made from peanuts and garlic. We started slowly on expanding palettes, eating just a few things some had not previously eaten, such as fish balls. Then on to a long walk down to the Bund on the river for views of the Pudong skyline. Minh picked up a terrific jacket at a rock bottom price and is now in the vanguard of fashion. Morgan and Libby found that they really can speak Chinese and got their cab successfully from the airport to the hotel, and told the dozens of people trying to sell us Rolex’s that they weren’t buying.
