Davidson Farmer’s Market Summer 2010 Internship

The mission of Davidson Farmer’s Market is to sponsor a weekly farmer’s market in Davidson which provides locally grown food, educates the public about nutrition and the importance of eating locally grown foods and offers musical entertainment, special events and cooking and other demonstrations to create a community festival for the Town. DFM’s goal is to create a vibrant community gathering place with locally grown agricultural and horticultural products and family-friendly educational, musical and entertainment activities.

Description: The DFM Summer Intern will support the Market Manager with preparations for the weekly market as outlined below, and on Market Day (Saturdays). The intern will gain experience with all facets of Farmer’s Market management.
Responsibilities: The intern will assist with general market preparations (weekly newsletter, market set up, staffing the DFM table, vendor issues, chef demos, market take down), attend farm visits, help plan educational programs, coordinate market volunteers and facilitate recruitment, maintain the special events schedule, attend the FM Board and Committee meetings, research and draft grant proposals, and perform general administrative or office tasks.
Location: Davidson, NC
Duration: 10 weeks (start & end dates flexible), approx. 30 hours/week
Wage/Salary: Stipend for living expenses (pending DFM receipt of Community Service Office grant)
Qualifications: The DFM is seeking an enthusiastic, friendly, hard-working summer intern with interest or experience in the areas of local food, nutrition, agriculture, farming, the environment, sustainability, and the nonprofit sector. Candidates should be organized, innovative, and have excellent written and oral communication skills. Open to rising sophomore, junior, and senior Davidson Students only.
