Last Thursday night, I attended a welcoming event for new graduate students at the School of Social Development and Public Policy. During the welcoming, Prof. Peng Xizhe, the dean of the school, gave a motivating speech to get the graduate students to follow the Fudan spirit and think and study independently. Prof. Zhang Letian, head of the anthropology department, also gave a small pep talk to the students, about looking for advisors, and other questions that the incoming graduate students may have. They also introduced me to the graduate students, and immediately encouraged them to take my class on Globalization and Culture. Hopefully, not everyone will follow that advice!
It was interesting to meet the students and hear the questions and concerns that they had in beginning their graduate career. Some of these may end up as anthropologists in the future (the large majority of them were masters students; I am not sure how many were doctoral candidates, but there’s only a couple of PhD students that start each year).
