Since I’ve been featuring some of the boys of Leewen, namely Dan and Paul, I figured I should give airtime to the girls of Leewen — above is a sample picture of the Leewen teachers. Well, not really; on Thursday morning, as we walked to the school, the health and fitness center next door to the school was having a fashion show in the square, crowded by a number of people watching the demonstration (before-after type of show). Below are the real teachers of Leewen — Lillian, Emily, and Laura. Lillian is a recent graduate of Swarthmore, and studied Chinese for four years there; Emily in the middle is a recent graduate (we hope, she hasn’t heard the results yet of her exams) from Oxford; Laura, on the right, is still in college, but she is teachng here while she visits her brother Jim (who is in charge of the foreign teachers). Not pictured are Dan and Britta, both graduates of Swarthmore; Britta has also studied four years of Chinese, and was an anthropology major there. There are also other teachers who I haven’t spent much time with, but they live in other areas of Qingdao.
