I just finished my first week up in Durham; I’m spending the year at the Nicholas School of the Environment, Duke University. I think there should be a class that focuses on alternative forms of transportation – not just public transportation (which would be nice, here in the south) or bicycles (which I also love), but two wheels that have a more extended range than bicycles. I love my Royal Enfield, but a motorcycle isn’t for everyone. I also love my Peirspeed Sachs MadAss, which while technically a motorcycle (125cc, would be a motorcycle in most countries), is much like a scooter. Both two-wheelers are listed as 85 mpg, but I find it difficult to get that actual gas mileage on my Enfield (500 cc). My MadAss, while it has a top speed of around 55 mph (with my weight on it!), is more akin to a scooter. I can park it in the bike racks without irritating too many people (it doesn’t have a visible gas tank, so it looks like a moped).
