Pecha Kucha on the Royal Enfield Bullet G5

June 14, 2011 By Fuji

As part of my 2009 ANT 372 class on analyzing media and producing ethnographic film, one of the first exercises I had my students do is to produce a pecha kucha – 20 slides, 20 seconds. A pecha kucha is an alternative media presentation style, a way to avoid death by powerpoint. It has spread globally through “pecha kucha nights,” events that have been described as “thinking and drinking” or “poor person’s TED.” Anyway, I had never made a pecha kucha, and to be fair to the students, I made one simultaneous to their making one, and presented it when they had to. I was rushed, as you can tell by the poor sound quality.

This will be one of the first projects that I will have you do in this class as well.

My Royal Enfield has a great story behind it, as I’ve written about before in earlier posts. The Bullet is indeed a beautiful bike, but mine has been in the shop for extended periods for warranty work. Since I don’t have the bike to ride (for now), I can live vicariously through the story.

Here’s a commercial for the Royal Enfield (featuring what is called in the US as the C5), beautifully shot and with powerful imagery of an India that I have yet to visit.

My ethnographic film class is coming up this fall, and to get ready for it, I’m going to post a couple of good shorts that I’ve seen on the web.

Here’s a nice short about a custom motorcycle builder; the filmmakers tell a good story here. For those in the class, consider finding craft people or small business owners – they often have the passion that translates well to video.

Essential Tools (mostly free) (Updated, 16 March 2017) Technological literacy (something I really need to define later) is essential to getting things done in today’s mediated world. There are a lot of useful applications out there that will cut back on the tears or punched walls late in the semester. Below are some of the […]
